Diamonds and gemstones worth millions stolen in Switzerland

43885.jpegFour diamonds worth millions were reportedly stolen Wednesday from a diamond trader exhibiting at the BaselWorld watch and jewelry show in Basel, Switzerland, news outlets report.

A spokesman for the Basel prosecutor's office, Markus Melzl, issued a statement to the following effect: "On Wednesday, 30 March 2011, at around 11:00 am, one of the as yet still unidentified perpetrators distracted an employee of a diamond trader in the exhibition hall 3.0, and stole four diamonds worth millions from the display window," Israel Diamond Portal reports.

As haute culture horology and jewelry brands across the globe conveyed at Baselworld, Switzerland, for one of the biggest industry fairs; a gang of five stole diamonds and gemstones worth millions of dollars.

The incident was an absolute shocker to the industry experts and designers who showcased their latest offerings and innovations at the various pavilions inside the venue.

As per reports, the diamonds were stolen at around 11 a.m. local time from a showcase in Hall 3. A spokesman of the Swiss Prosecutors office informed that three of the thieves broke into the display and stole the diamonds while two others distracted an employee at a diamond trader stall.

Following the incident, the exhibition hall was immediately shut down and all the visitors were checked for nearly 30 minutes, according to International Business Times.
