Two liger cubs survived from the breeding of a male lion and female Bengal tiger in a Taiwan private zoo. The zookeeper is now under investigation.

The breeding and crossing of protected animals in Taiwan is illegal, but zoo keeper Huang Kuo-nan said he did not mean for the mating to happen between his lion and tiger, DigitalJournal.com reports.

The zoo says that they did not breed the ligers on purpose, but they did say that they kept the lion and the tiger in the same cage.

"The pregnancy of the tigress caught me totally unprepared," said Huang Kuo-nan, the owner of the zoo. "The lion and the tigress have been kept in the sae cage since they were cubs more than six years, and nothing happened.", Gather.com informs.
