First Full Facial Transplant Patient Makes First Public Appearance

The first full facial transplant patient, Oscar, made his first public appearance on July 26, 2010. He attended a press conference located at the University Hospital Valld’Hebron. The university is in Barcelona, Spain.

Oscar is a farmer is a Spanish farmer. He is thirty-one years old, and he wanted to regain some sort of normalcy. His face was severely injured because of an accident that occurred.

Oscar underwent several surgeries prior to this one. There were nine previous operations that failed. He was then considered for this full transplant, Gossip Jackal reports.

Oscar had accidentally shot himself in the face five years ago, and last March it took 30 doctors 24 hours to lift a donor's entire face — including his skin, jaw, nose, cheekbones, lips, muscles, palate, teeth, and eyelids — and stick it onto Oscar.

His sister says Oscar is looking forward to the "little things, like walking down the street without anyone looking at him," New York Magazine informs.
