Former Us Vice President Al Gore last night said he and wife Tipper are separating - just two weeks after their 40th wedding anniversary.
The couple, who have four grown-up children, broke the news to friends in an email. They said: "This is very much a mutual decision."
Bill Clinton's deputy, 62, and Tipper, 61, met at a high school prom in 1965, according to Mirror.co.uk.
The Gores have four adult children. In 2002 the Gores co-authored a book on marriage and family life in America entitled Joined at the Heart.
Mr Gore, 62, reinvented himself as an eco-warrior, winning the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize and an Oscar for the documentary An Inconvenient Truth.
Mr Gore’s campaigning to raise awareness of climate change has involved travelling without his wife and this appears to have been a factor in their separation, Times Online says.
