Bulgarian officer accused of possessing multimillion-euro drug

A Bulgarian police officer was arrested for possessing a multimillion-euro haul of amphetamine powder that was apparently destined for export, authorities said Tuesday.

The 30-year-old officer was stopped for a routine check at a gas station, where police found nearly 100 kilograms, or 220 pounds, of amphetamine powder inside his vehicle, said Kalin Mihov, deputy chief of a specialized anti-crime unit.

The drug-making material, having an estimated street value of EUR2.2 million, or US$3.2 million, was apparently being prepared for export to Turkey, where it was to be processed into pills, Mihov said.

Amphetamine is a synthetic drug that stimulates the central nervous system.

Police also arrested a second suspect and were searching for other accomplices in the drug-producing operation.
