The Metropolitan Opera and Rhapsody provide the public with digital music service in which 100 operas from 1937-2006 are available for purchase.
The operas include performances by sopranos Maria Callas, Beverly Sills, Birgit Nilsson and Renata Tebaldi, and tenors Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Franco Corelli and Richard Tucker. They can be accessed from TiVo set-top boxes, in-home digital audio players, personal computers and portable media players.
A Rhapsody Unlimited subscription is $12.99 (8.8 EUR) per month, and prices for individual tracks vary, the Met said.
Also, the Met and Universal Classics announced they are releasing DVDs of two operas from the Met's first season of high-definition broadcasts: Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin" with Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Renee Fleming and Ramon Vargas, and Bellini's "I Puritani" with Anna Netrebko. Both will be available Dec. 18, with "Onegin" on Decca and "Puritani" on Deutsche Grammophon.
The Met's second season of high-definition broadcasts starts Dec. 15, with Gounod's "Romeo et Juliette" with Netrebko and Roberto Alagna. Five of this season's eight broadcasts are to be released on DVD by EMI Classics.
Rhapsody is a joint venture between MTV Networks and RealNetworks.
