Pro-Putin youth organization placed pickets near the Bolshoi Theater last Friday to protest "The Children of Rosenthal," an experimental new opera which is due to premiere March 23. The opera's libretto was penned by controversial writer Vladimir Sorokin.
Moving Together are planning to picket the theater up till the opening night.
A representative of Moving Together said that several of its members would be standing in vicinity of the Bolshoi Theater on a daily basis. They will be giving away leaflets and booklets while explaining to the people why the opera should not be staged in the Bolshoi Theater.
Meanwhile, despite pressure from its cultural committee the State Duma rejected a motion to put the opera issue on the agenda. Alexei Mitrofanov, deputy chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party in the Duma called the attempts to influence the repertoir of the Bolshoi Theater "components of censorship."
