Russian Photography Season in Berlin

The Moscow House of Photography /MHP/ is opening a Season of Russian Photography in Berlin. Part of a program called Days of Russian Culture in Germany, the Season consists of four photographic exhibitions embracing a lot of different subjects to cover different aspects of Russia's history and current situation.

According to MHP Director Olga Sviblova, the first exposition to be arranged in the Berlin-based Russian House is called "Alexander Rodchenko. Circus," which runs until the end of November. The following three expositions are "Russian Repast. 1870-2003," "Nu in Russian 20th-century Photography," and finally, the most controversial of all four, "10 Years of Capitalism in Russia, or the End of the 'New Russians' Epoch." The Season ends in April 2004.

All exhibits belong to the MHP or come from Moscow-based private collections. The bulk of the photographs have traveled abroad for the first time, even though many of them have become classics of the photographic art in Russia.

The "Alexander Rodchenko. Circus" exhibition premiered in Moscow this spring and was part of an international festival called "Fashion and Style in Photography." It features unique pictures the famous avant-garde artist took in between the late 1920s and the early 1940s.
