Theory on influence of carbonic acid on global warming unconfirmed

The theory on influence of carbonic acid on the global warming of climate has not received serious scientific confirmation so far, adviser to the president of Russia on economic issues Andrei Illarionov recalled speaking in Moscow on Wednesday at the World Conference on Climate Change.

Speaking about the influence of emissions of carbonic acid into the atmosphere on the global warming or of the influence of the athropogenic factor, it is necessary to take into consideration the fact that more questions than answers emerge in this problem, Illarionov noted.

"In particular, according to the data of scientific research, in the past 400,000 years a dramatic rise of temperature on Earth occurred every 100,000 years, and this was not in the least linked with man's activity. In the past millennium considerable changes of temperature were observed also in the 11th, 14th and 17th centuries," Illarionov recalled.

He specified that in the 20th century the average temperature rose by 0.6 degrees. At the same time, observations show that this is often not linked with the growth of production. For instance, in the 1940s-1970s, when a sharp growth of production was underway in the whole world, the average temperature on Earth dropped by 0.2 degrees. But at the beginning of the 1920s when the world economy was going through a slump temperature went up.

"In this connection it is logical to ask: will reduction of such emissions, specifically within the Kyoto Protocol, allow the set aims to be attained and average temperature to be stabilized?" he said. "We have to answer these questions and correspondingly come to understand if Russia needs to ratify the Kyoto Protocol," the president's adviser emphasized
