Chekhov Moscow Art Academic Theatre opens new season

One of Russia's oldest theatres, the Anton Chekhov Moscow Art Academic Theatre (MKhAT) will open its new 106th season.

Friday saw the traditional gathering of the company. Theatre's art director Oleg Tabakov, one of the most outstanding modern Russian artists, presented the repertoire of the new season. "The Last Victim" by classic Russian dramatist Alexander Ostrovsky will be the first premiere. All in all, the audience will see no less than five new performances on the stage where Chekhov's "Seagull" premiered in the beginning of the last century. The work by famous Japanese director Tagashi Suzuki is among them. He will stage Shakespeare's "King Lear" in MKhAT.

Russian Minister of Culture Mikhail Shvydkoi attended the gathering of the company. He reminded actors of the words of German writer Thomas Mann that theatre is the place where the crowd turns into people and wished MKhAT to remain such theatre.
