Mariinsky set for season finale

The Mariinsky Theater winds up its 220th season tonight with a performance of Tchaikovsky's 'Swan Lake' as choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov (1895) and revised by Konstantin Sergeyev (1950), Rosbalt was told at the theater. Daria Pavlenko will dance Odette-Odile, and Igor Kolb will dance the part of Siegfried. Both are international and national prize-winners.

The current Mariinsky season, which opened October 6, 2002, featured 10 premieres, including a full staging of Wagner's four-opera 'Ring' cycle; the smash-hit Hollywood film, 'K-19,' the soundtrack for which was recorded by the Mariinsky orchestra, and Anton Rubenstein's 'Demon' as part of the 'Russian Season' in Paris. The Mariinsky also staged its third International Festival of Ballet (February 21-March 2) and the 11th 'Stars of White Nights,' an international festival of arts. A gala concert at the Mariinsky on May 30 featured stars of opera and ballet from around the world performing before Vladimir Putin and the leaders of more than 40 foreign countries. The season included exchanges between the Mariinsky and Moscow's Bolshoi Theater as well as Mariinsky tours to Paris, Graz, New York and London. During the season, the Mariinsky also hosted John Noimayer's Hamburg Ballet, the Royal Ballet of London, the New York City Ballet, the Venice Symphony Orchestra, the Israel Symphony Orchestra, the 'Soloists of Moscow,' the Elysian Fields Orchestra, the string quartet 'Soloists of Venice,' the Philharmonia of Nations, the World Peace Orchestra and many others.

The Mariinsky's 221st season will open October 10 with Rimsky-Korsakov's 'The Golden Cockerel.'
