Russia plans to build nuclear power station on Mars

Russia only has very long-term plans to build a nuclear power station on Mars. This was announced to a Rosbalt correspondent by Pavel Andreyev, deputy head constructor at the Moscow-based nuclear power company Krasnaya Zvezda {Red Star}. He denied reports in the West that Russia already has a plan for building a nuclear power station and will complete it within the next thirty years.

According to the BBC the first nuclear power station on Mars will be located in the mountainous region close to the base camp of an expedition to be sent by Rosaviacosmos. The crew will consist of 6 engineers, who will construct the station out of huge blocks, the BBC reports. According to the British television company, scientists are still unsure how these blocks will be transported to Mars, which is situated 300 million kilometres from earth. Nonetheless, scientists are convinced that if the project goes ahead, the future residents of Mars will have an energy supply for many years to come.
