Georgian stage director Robert Sturua to present new production at Moscow festival

World-famed Georgian stage director Robert Sturua will present a production of Waiting for Godo play by Samuel Beckett within the framework of the fifth international Chekhov theatre festival which is being held in Moscow from May 17. The production is slated to be shown on June 3 and 4.

As Sturua said at the press conference on June 2, he long dreamed of staging this play of Beckett. The first part was now staged at the Georgian Shota Rustaveli state academic drama theatre which the director heads. Work on the second part is in store for him.

Sturua plans to stage Shota Rustaveli' poem the Knight in a Panther's Skin as well as The Requiem of world-renowned Georgian composer Gia Kancheli whom the director has been constantly cooperating with. As Sturua said, he invited leading soloist of Bolshoi Theatre ballet Ilze Liepa for this work. Robert Sturua will stage Mazepa opera in Bolshoi Theatre the first night of which is scheduled for January 28, 2004.

Alongside Rustaveli theatre, Robert Sturua actively works abroad. He has already staged 25 plays of Shakespeare, Sophocles, Moliere, Brecht and Chekhov in different cities of the world. The total number of his works has already topped 100.
