Anchor of Peter I's epoch to be placed on Basil island in honour of St. Petersburg's 300th anniversary

A memorable sign, an anchor of the epoch of Tsar Peter I, will be open on the Vasilyevsky Island in St. Petersburg.

The ancient anchor with the stamp "Olonets 1723" was discovered during excavations on the Vasilyevsky Island in 2001, the education and culture territorial department of the Vasilyevsky Island told RIA Novosti.

According to experts, first Russian galleys on the Baltic Sea were equipped with such forged anchors.

The anchor is well-preserved. The find was turned to a monument on the initiative of Russia's Ecology research-and-production association which discovered the unique thing.

The anchor will be placed on a granite plate 3x4 metres in size with a fragment of St. Petersburg's coat of arms and an inscription, "Made in 1723 at the plant in Olonets. Found in 2001 on the Vasilyevsky Island. Erected in honour of St. Petersburg's 300th anniversary." The ceremony of unveiling the monument will take place on May 23 as part of the anniversary decade.
