Schpigel to Finance Search for Amber Room

The German magazine Der Spiegel is ready to fund the search for the famous Amber Room of Tsar Peter the Great German invaders dismantled and took away from Russia during WWII. Der Spiegel editor's office said this to the administration of the Kaliningrad region, Russia's westernmost exclave, which was part of Germany before the war.

One story goes that the amber that once decorated a room in a royal palace near St Petersburg was hidden in the area of the royal castle in the city of Kenigsberg later renamed Kaliningrad. Der Spiegel reported the excavation on the castle ruins would resume this June.

The excavation effort was launched 2 years ago and was funded among others by the magazine, but was suspended for the lack of funds.

This time as well the diggings will be overseen by Kaliningrad's history and arts museum.
