One of the main problems causing insomnia is smoking. A new study showed that a smoker is four times more subjected to the likelihood of feeling tired when waking up and usually spends less time in deep sleep than nonsmokers do.
It may be explained by time-dependent effects of smoking upon sleep periods. First of all it’s difficult for smokers to fall asleep due to the stimulating effects of nicotine. During the sleep the so called nicotine withdrawal causes further sleep disturbance.
To support the information the scientists studied 80 volunteers, half – smokers and half – nonsmokers. It turned out that 22.5 percent of smokers had restless sleep, while only 5 percent of nonsmokers had the same results. Smokers also had a higher percentage of light sleep.
The smoking participants also experienced difficulties at the onset of sleep. This may prove that nicotine effects are strongest in the early stages of sleep and decrease towards the end.
The new study may give another impetus for smokers to reduce or give up the bad habit.
