Stolen ground beef may be tainted with infectious bacterium

American Fresh Foods and the Food Safety and Inspection Service of the United States Department of Agriculture informed consumers that the company’s trailer with almost 15,000 pounds of ground beef was stolen.

Promptly followed the warning that the company recalled the stolen meat due to suspicions that it may be tainted with E. coli 0157:H7. But it didn’t reach the place of destination.

Escherichia coli O157:H7 is an enterohemorrhagic strain of the bacterium Escherichia coli and a cause of foodborne illness. An estimated 73,000 cases of infection and 61 deaths occur each year in the United States alone. Infection often leads to bloody diarrhea, and occasionally to kidney failure, especially in young children and elderly people. Most illness has been associated with eating undercooked, contaminated ground beef, drinking unpasteurized milk, swimming in or drinking contaminated water, and eating contaminated vegetables.

Officials warn the consumers not to buy ground beef under questionable circumstances. The packaged beef is under the trademark “American Fresh Foods” with the establishment number: EST. 13116, produced on Dec. 19.
