Security forces killed two prominent Islamic militants and detained two others in a special operation to neutralize rebels in the southern Russian region of Dagestan, the regional Interior Ministry said Wednesday.
One police officer was killed and four police and security service officers were wounded in the operation, in which up to five alleged militants were surrounded in a dormitory on the outskirts of the Dagestani city of Khasavyurt, near the border with Chechnya, the ministry press service said.
Meanwhile, up to 30 alleged militants targeted police officers in six separate attacks overnight in the southern Russian region of Ingushetia, the Interfax news agency reported. The brother of one officer was wounded, the news agency said, reports the AP.
