Shooting in southern Chechnya wounds six

A gunbattle with unknown militants in southern Chechnya wounded five paramilitary soldiers and a local resident.

Soldiers with the Chechen presidential security service - known as the Kadyrov's Commandos - were searching for gunmen in the Shali district when the firing erupted outside a house Sunday evening, deputy district administrator Ramzan Tasukhanov said.

One of the paramilitary soldiers was seriously wounded, along with a civilian, he said. Russian agencies said at least two of the gunmen were killed. The house was heavily damaged by a grenade launcher, Tasukhanov was quoted by the AP as saying.

The security force is overseen by Ramzan Kadyrov, son of assassinated Chechen President Akhmad Kadyrov.

Chechnya remains plagued by violence and rampant abductions nearly six years after Russian forces re-entered the province to end a separatist insurgency.
