Russian vessel stuck on Pacific bottom

A deep-sea diving vessel with seven sailors aboard was stuck on the sea floor off the Kamchatka Peninsula on Russia's Pacific Coast on Friday after becoming caught on an unidentified object, Russian navy officials and news reports said.

Navy officials were trying to determine why the military vessel, called a bathyscaph, was stuck some 625 feet below the surface before starting rescue efforts, Pacific Fleet spokesman Capt. Alexander Kosolapov said in televised comments.

Kosolapov said that there was likely enough oxygen on the vessel to last four days, because such crafts typically have supplies for 120 hours and the accident occurred Thursday during a training exercise, according to AP.

News agencies reported that there were seven people aboard the military vessel
