Fire breaks out on ship being built for Chinese navy in Russia

Fire broke out Wednesday on a ship being built for the Chinese Navy at St. Petersburg's Northern Wharf, killing one worker and a firefighter sent to battle the blaze, Russian emergency response officials said.

Four of the five workers in the area of the blaze on the ship's third deck were rescued but one was later found dead, said Yuri Yushin, a spokesman for the Emergency Situations Ministry in the northwest region. One firefighter died from asphyxia and injuries.

The fire was brought under control about two hours after it started, officials said.

The Interfax news agency said that the ship was a minesweeper being built for the Chinese navy.
