55% of Russian young people remain drug-free

More than 55% of young Russians have never used drugs, Aleksandr Mikhailov, deputy chair of the Russian State Drug Control Agency, declared Tuesday at a press conference here.

He also said there has been a ninefold increase in the amount of drugs used in Russia. 'But we have managed to slow the rate of growth, although the situation remains serious,' he said.

He gave these statistics for persons between 12 and 22 years of age: 22.6% have tried drugs up to three times; more than 14% use drugs on a weekly basis, and almost 8% use drugs daily. 'Eight percent-almost 900,000 Russian kids-are addicts,' Mikhailov said.
