Cyber-space crimes in Russia doubling yearly

Computer-related crimes in Russia are doubling yearly and call for strong countermeasures, Vladislav Sherstyuk, first deputy secretary of Russia's National Security Council, declared here Monday at an international conference on 'Assuring Information Security.' He said one closed Russian corporate network had registered up to 1,500 attacks a day by hackers.

Sherstyuk called for a speeding up of the development and introduction of competitive Russian confidentiality software and legislative and financial encouragement to raise the percentage of such Russian technology on the 'electronic' marketplace. Flexibility toward innovation, tax-system refinements and stepped-up concern for intellectual property rights are needed, he said.
