Russians become less afraid of war

Russians have become less afraid of war. This was the result of a survey carried out by the VTsIOM research agency. The survey revealed that at present Russians fear the loss of loved ones more than anything else. 48% said they fear this whereas in 1993 the figure was at 51%. 42% said they fear wars and large-scale conflicts whereas 11 years ago 56% said they feared this. Interestingly, middle-aged and elderly respondents appear to fear war the most.

56% of respondents claim there is now greater fear in Russia than there was four years ago while 31% disagree.

34% fear destitution (only 28% feared this in 1993) while 27% fear old age, illness and helplessness (just 20% feared this in 1993). However, less people are now afraid of hunger (fallen from 37% in 1993 to 25% in 2004). Also 5% less people now fear physical assault.

As in 1993, 22% of respondents fear the arbitrary power of government. Also, 9% of people fear Judgement Day while 8% fear public humiliation and 7% fear their own death.

The survey was carried out in January and involved 1600 respondents.
