Chechen militant surrenders to authorities

A militant in the Vedeno district of Chechnya has surrendered to local authorities, the regional operational headquarters for control of the anti-terrorist operation in the North Caucasus has reported this Tuesday.

"The other day an elderly man came to the command of a federal unit located in the Vedeno district to deliver a petition from his son wishing to withdraw from participation in illegal armed formations and give up completely unlawful activity," a headquarters officer said.

After that, the petition was submitted to the Vedeno law-enforcement bodies. "After consultations and the receipt of security guarantees, the militant accompanied by his relatives came to the justice bodies and voluntarily surrendered the 7.62 mm. Kalashnikov sub-machine gun, four F-1 fragmentation hand grenades and five 7.62 mm cartridge magazines" the headquarters officer said.

According to the officer, the surrendered rebel is giving testimony regarding the location of his illegal armed formation and also of militants' accomplices. The name of the surrendered rebel has not been disclosed in the interests of the investigation.
