Russian experts: Single EU constitution could bring complications

There is no need to create a single constitution to resolve the problems which face the European Union. It would be better for EU members to sign a joint charter. This was announced today by Vladimir Sivitsky, a member of the Russian Federation Council committee on local government.

'Europe will be taking a risk if it decides to take on a single constitution as this way EU members will lose their national identity and whenever problems arise politicians will stand up and blame it on the single constitution. Such a state of affairs would undoubtedly lead to a rise in nationalist sentiment,' Mr Sivitsky said. He added that the main aspects of EU activity could be laid down in a charter.

A single constitution will lead to serious problems with the centralization of power and the increase of bureaucracy while democracy will be under threat,' Andrei Medushevsky, a political scientist has said.
