Russian diplomat on Hussein's future

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Yury Fedotov expressed hope that the arrest of Saddam Hussein would promote security in Iraq and intensify political settlement, with the UN playing a major role in it. The prior regime was deposed long time ago, but the genuine stabilization is still not on the horizon, the official said. He added it was Iraqi people that should decide on Hussein's future. In order to avoid legal ambiguities it would be best to let legitimate judicial bodies of the new sovereign Iraq to decide on this issue, the minister said in his statement.
