Most Russians rue breakup of Soviet Union

64% of Russians rue the breakup of the Soviet Union. This was the result of a survey carried out by ROMIR Monitoring between November 20 and 24 this year. The survey was held to mark the 12-year anniversary of the Belovezhsk agreement, which was signed by Russia, Ukraine and Belarus on December 8, 1991, to declare the end of the Soviet Union and the formation of the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States). According to the survey, 16% approve of this decision while 17% said they are indifferent. Meanwhile, 59% of respondents believe the breakup of the Soviet Union could have been avoided whereas 35% said it was inevitable.

1500 respondents took part in the survey.
