Igor Ivanov: Russia fulfils main task - to prevent bloodshed in Georgia

Russia has fulfilled its main task to prevent bloodshed in Georgia, Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov told a press conference.

"Russia's task was to prevent violence in Georgia which could have undermined its stability, political system and territorial integrity," the minister said.

"It is very important that there was no bloodshed," he added.

"Obviously, violence could have had serious consequences," Ivanov noted.

"I am not sure that the final decision on Shevardnadze's resignation was the best one. This is the question to politicians who took this decision. This is not the decision of the Russian side," the minister added.

According to Igor Ivanov, now Russia will follow the developments in Georgia.
