Putin: independent courts underlie democratic society

Russian President Vladimir Putin attaches huge importance to the court system in countering corruption.

Independence of judges and the entire court system is a major component of any democratic society, the Russian head of state said at a meeting with the Supreme, Constitutional and Supreme Arbitration Courts.

It would be more accurate to speak about this in the context of increasing trust in the court system on the part of Russian citizens, Putin remarked.

The court system should be efficient, Putin continued.

We often have to deal with corruption and the court system plays an essential role in this sense, Putin concluded.
