Aeroflot airplanes prohibited from flying over Canada

Aeroflot airplanes have been prohibited from flying over Canadian territory. In this connection, the November 1 Moscow-Toronto Aeroflot flight was postponed, said Aeroflot Deputy Director Lev Koshlyakov on radio Echo Moskvy on November 1. He said that the prohibition was connected with the implementation of new flight security standards. Now all airplanes completing international flights must be equipped with a bulletproof cockpit door and a special video system allowing for observation of the airplanes salon.

Koshlyakov said that all Russian airplanes have for a long time been equipped with bulletproof doors, though Canadian authorities implemented the prohibition. 'In this connection we changed our routes and redirected our flights to the US. This has not led to any changes in the flight schedule,' he said. Koshlyakov said a number of flights to Canada, however, will be cancelled. Passengers will be informed about these changes. 'We aren't making any dramatic moves as a result of this prohibition, though the decision taken by Canadian authorities came about rather unexpectedly and requires spending more money on working with passengers in transit,' he said. Koshlyakov said that of Russian carriers only Aeroflot makes regular flights to Canada. In response to Canada's prohibition, Russian authorities have implemented limitations on Air Canada for transiting Russian air space.
