Admiralty Wharves completes construction on fourth-generation submarine

Admiralty Wharves is nearing completion of construction of a leading fourth-generation diesel electric Lada submarine. Admiralty Wharves told Rosbalt that construction on the first submarine named Saint Petersburg began in 1997. In spring 2004 it will undergo testing.

The submarine is the first of its kind in the world. According to specialists, the submarine is most similar to the German 212 A submarines. The Saint Petersburg differs from third-generation submarines in that it has one hull instead of two, a new level of systems automation and new weapons. Moreover, it can sail for up to 40 days, which allows it to sail in the oceans. The Saint Petersburg falls into the class of defensive ships.

Admiralty Wharves specializes in the construction of submarines and oil tankers. 298 submarines have been built at the wharves, including 41 nuclear submarines. In 2002, the company completed construction of a series of five artic tankers with a deadweight of 20 thousand tonnes for LUKoil.
