Today, the international Cool-100 wilderness 100k (161 km) ultramarathon starts in Russia. 15 athletes from Australia, Belarus, Finland, Great Britain, Russia, and the United States will have to cover 100 miles along the Russian-Finnish border in 24 hours.
According to organizers of the event, the route meets all requirements of an international ultramarathon competition. It includes 35 km of extremely rough terrain and 109 km of paths and abandoned forest roads.
The rules of the competition prohibit the use of any kind of assistance. The event will be held in the "non-stop" format, which means that the participants will not be allowed to make prolonged resting stops. The finish line of the ultramarathon is on the central square of the city of Vyborg on the Baltic Sea coast.
An international marathon of his kind is held in Russia for the first time.
