Russia's gas market liberalisation impossible without Europe's

The liberalisation of the gas market in Russia is impossible without the liberalisation of the gas market in Europe. This opinion was expressed to reporters in Moscow on Thursday by Andrei Illarionov, the Russian President's adviser for economic matters, at the visiting session of the Davos Economic Forum.

"At the present time we are discussing at large the question of the state increase in the gas prices or their lowering. A normal answer in this case is that the gas prices should be liberalised," said Illarionov.

He explained that the question of the gas prices, of the state regulation of the gas prices and also the liberalisation of the gas market are the key ones for Russia's entry into the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

"Today the ball is on the side of the WTO partners, and it is they who can say when Russia can enter this organisation," said Illarionov.

"So far, we receive very strange proposals from the partners. One of them concerns the gas prices. In the opinion of the European Union, they are too low, and this situation should be changed," said Andrei Illarionov.
