Russian MP: Amnesty in Chechnya has brought no positive results

The amnesty in Chechnya has not brought any positive results. As a Rosbalt correspondent reports, this was announced by Russian MP Aslambek Aslakhanov at a press conference yesterday. 'As far as I am aware, not one of the active Chechen rebels has surrendered his weapons over the last three months,' he said. In this respect, according to Mr Aslakhanov, the current amnesty is no different to the previous one which was declared in December 1999 and also failed to change anything. 'The military conflict with rebel groups in Chechnya continues, innocent civilians are still being killed and hostages continue to be taken,' he added. In his opinion, it will only be possible to resolve the Chechen problem by negotiating with all those who have some kind of influence in the region.
