Time for registering presidential candidates in Chechnya runs out tonight

The time for registering candidates for the post of President of Chechnya runs out on Saturday, August 30 at 18:00, Moscow Time, Abdul-Kerim Arsakhanov, chairman of the Chechen election commission, reminded reporters by telephone the day before.

He said registration of the remaining two of the eleven presidential candidates is to be made today. They are State Duma deputy representing Chechnya Aslambek Aslakhanov and Husein Biybulatov, former Deputy Prime Minister of Chechnya and now adviser to the chief of the Elektrogorsk Research Center for the safety of nuclear power stations.

The requests for their registration were made on Friday, he said, but "election commission members found some faults in their documents." In particular, both did not mention in their applications their intention to run for president of the republic and failed to mention the citizens of what state they are.

Aslakhanov and Biybulatov handed in not the lists of signatures in their favor but money pledges of 4.5 million rubles (one dollar roughly equals 30 rubles), as is required by the law on elections.

Today of the eleven presidential candidates in Chechnya, nine have been officially registered. They are: the present head of Chechnya Akhmad Kadyrov, professor at Chechen State University Avkhad Khachukayev, businessmen Malik Saidullayev and Husein Dzhabrailov, deputy military commandant of Chechnya Said-Selim Tsuyev, deputy general director of the Grozneftegaz oil company Kudus Saduyev, ex-chief of the administration of the Achkhoi Martan District Shamil Burayev, Chechen poet Nikolai Paizulayev and temporarily unemployed Abdula Bugayev. However, Dzhabrailov was not yet given a candidate's certificate so far, as he was absent at the latest meetings of the election commission. But the certificate is ready and waiting for him, Arsakhanov assured.

According to the election law, all registered candidates should go on leave three days after the moment of registration.

The election campaign of the presidential candidates will start on September 4.

The presidential elections are scheduled for October 5.
