Kaliningrad wins GM pact

Avtotor,located here, will produce Hummer offroad vehicles. As reported to Rosbalt by the press service of the regional administration, a contract on the matter was signed by the Avtotor group of companies and General Motors, the US corporation, at the Moscow International Auto Show.

Taking part in the signing were Ilya Klebanov, Russia's minister of Industry, Science and Technology, and Vladimir Egorov, the governor of the Kaliningrad Region. The governor pointed in particular to the fact that cooperation with GM represents the first serious American investment in the region. Assembly of the offroad vehicle is the first in what is seen as a continuing series of undertakings by the giant automaker in Kaliningrad. The agreement on cooperation looks to the production of three other GM models at the plant.

The Kaliningrad holding currently produces cars for the Korean firm KIA Motors and the German firm BMW.
