Moscow: UN peace-building experience should be used in Iraq

The UN rich peace-keeping experience can and should be used in Iraq, Russia's UN ambassador Sergey Lavrov said Thursday at the UN Security Council session.

He suggested granting the UN mission in Iraq the right to participate directly in political life, to carry out constitutional reforms, to organise elections and to form an internationally-recognized government. "This is required to promote a post-war settlement in the interests of the Iraqi people," he added.

Russia also urges considering the status and parametres of international military presence in Iraq, said Lavrov. The mandate of this presence should pursue the aim of providing safe and favourable conditions for the Iraqi people to exercise their right to independent determination of their future life, concluded the Russian diplomat.
