New aromatic stamps issued in Russia

The Russian Communications Ministry is issuing a series of entirely new postage stamps, round in form and smelling of fresh fruit. The series comes out on August 27 and is called The Gifts of Nature.

According to a source in the Marka publishing and shopping centre, the scent comes from aromatised glue on the back of each stamp. The know-how comes from a French firm and has never been used in the Russian stamp-printing business before.

The fruit pictured on the new stamps are pineapple, pear, melon, wild strawberry, and apple. The miniatures were drawn by Pyotr Zhilichkin, known to stamp collectors as the author of beetle and fish series. A total of 630,000 aromatic stamps will be issued. The first specimen issued will be cancelled with a special First Day impress in a ceremony staged at the Moscow Central Post Office.
