30 year daily precipitation record beaten in Moscow

A thirty year record of daily precipitation was beaten in Moscow. According to the Hydrometeorological Bureau, this past Tuesday 51 mm of precipitation fell in the Russian capital. The previous record of 49.6 mm was registered August 9, 1973.

The strong rainfall significantly complicated traffic situation in the city. Wednesday morning the traffic was interrupted at one of the Moscow subway lines. Due to mud and sand brought by the water onto the rails, the Filevskaya metro line in the West of the city was inactive for about one hour. Part of that line is above ground.

Streetcar and trolley bus traffic was disrupted in nine districts of the city. On some streets the water level above the pavement exceeded 30 centimetres. The passengers were transported by some extra buses that were urgently assigned to the critical bus routes.
