On Saturday Russia celebrates the 73rd anniversary of creation of Airborne Troops.
In Moscow paratroopers will traditionally mark their professional day by festive gatherings. "Blue berets" will meet with the command of the airborne troops, veterans and participants in combat operations in Afghanistan and Chechnya. The festivities program also includes a concert in which Russian variety performance stars will take part.
About 1000 militia officers and servicemen will ensure security during the celebration of the Airborne Troops Day.
On 2 August 1930 during the experimental and demonstration exercises of the Moscow military district near Voronezh (a city in Central Russia) 12 parachute jumpers landed in the rear of the conventional enemy. Since that time this day is celebrated as the birthday of Airborne Troops.
