300 Russian sportsmen to compete in US stage of Moscow-Utah youth games

Russian sportsmen will compete in the second stage of the Moscow-Utah youth games, which will be held in the US state of Utah in February 2004. As a Rosbalt correspondent reports, this was announced by Mayor of Moscow Yuri Luzhkov at a press conference today. He said that girls and boys of eighteen and under will compete in winter sports such as skating, skiing and ice hockey. Summer sports such as tennis, basketball, volleyball and swimming may also be included indoors. The most important result of the first stage of the Moscow-Utah youth games was the renewal of friendship between the US and Russia.

According to Chairman of the State Sports Committee Vyacheslav Fetisov, 'once the children have made friends, the adults will simply have to follow suit and make friends too.' Mr Luzhkov believes that a Youth Olympics should be organised and should be held two years before the usual Olympics.

The first stage of the Moscow-Utah youth games took place in Moscow from July 19-26. Moscow children came first in 95 events including swimming, water polo and volleyball while the American children came first in only 13 events.
