Soros names some reasons for reduction of his charitable activity in Russia

US billionaire and philanthropist George Soros has announced the reasons for the reduction of the financing of scientific and educational projects in Russia by his fund. According to him, over 15 years he has spent about one billion US dollars on the support of science, educational reform and the introduction of the Internet in the Russian Federation. Today, as Soros believes, it is inappropriate to continue to provide subsidies to Russia. He believes that it is the state that must support these spheres. Besides, there are persons in Russia who are richer than I, he added.

The financier also said that with his support about 20 funds had been set up in Russia to deal with these projects, including the New Russia fund, which can be called the successor to the Open Sky Institute.

Another reason for the reduction of the charitable activity carried out by Soros in Russia is his desire to channel his efforts into the struggle for the global open society in the USA.

In his opinion, there is a dangerous trend in the USA when the executive branch has been placed under the influence of ideologists who have forgotten the principle of open society - there is no monopoly for the truth.

In particular, the financier considers as very dangerous the doctrine of US President George Bush on the use of preventive military measures, which was applied during the organization of an attack against Iraq.

The USA wants to impose its model of democratic society. I hope that the US society will not accept this position, he said.
