State Duma Speaker advocates adoption of law "On state support to large families"

Speaker of the State Duma Gennady Seleznev has spoken in favour of adopting the law "On state support to large families" as soon as possible and of introducing the federal post of a children's right commissioner. He said this at a meeting with the representatives of the Russian fund Semya /Family/ on Tuesday.

The meeting was held in the State Duma building and was devoted to the problems of large families.

Since 1989 the number of large families in Russia has fallen from 2.7 million to 1.074 million, Seleznev said. "Families with five or more children account for 5.2 per cent of the total number of families, those with 9 and more children for 0.1 per cent," the speaker pointed out.

"Unfortunately, so far our country cannot boast of stability in mother and child welfare," Seleznev said. "I can hardly imagine how one can survive on the children's miserable benefit," he added.
