Chess internet-match between St.Petersburg and Paris to be held during anniversary celebrations

During the celebrations of the 300th anniversary of St.Petersburg /which used to be the capital of the Russian Empire and now is also referred to as the Northern capital and has an unofficial status of Russia's second capital/ teams from St.Petersburg and Paris will hold a unique chess internet match on May 28th, head of the game's press center world class Grand Master Mark Taimanov told journalists on Monday.

The St.Petersburg team comprises world class Grand Master, 1999 World Champion Alexander Khalifman, world class Grand Master, three times Russian Champion Pyotr Svidler, world class Grand Master, four times USSR Champion Viktor Korchnoi, who now lives in Switzerland, and world class Grand Master, 1999 Russian champion Konstantin Sakayev, Taimanov said.

According to him, Paris will be represented by a team from the whole Europe, comprising world class Grand Master, 2000 world champion in classic chess Vladimir Kramnik /Russia/, world class Grand Master, participant of the Russia vs. World match Timur Rajabov /Armenia/, world class Grand Master, champion of Paris, Laurent Fressinet and the world's youngest world class Grand Master Sergei Karyakin /Ukraine/.

The match will be played simultaneously in Paris and St.Petersburg, in the Paris chess club and in the international press center "St.Petersburg is 300" respectively.

Each participant will play one game against an opponent, for which he will have 15 minutes plus 10 seconds for each move he makes. The chess players will move figures on special boards that will immediately pass on a signal about the move made to the opponent's board.

In St.Petersburg the match will be commented by ex-World Champions Boris Spassky and Anatoly Karpov, in Paris by world class Grand Master, many times champion of France Joel Lautier.
