Russian airbase to be stationed in Kyrgyzstan

A Russian airbase will be permanently deployed on the Kant airdrome in Kyrgyzstan from July, said Nikolai Bordyzha, Secretary General of the Collective Security Council.

According to him, rapid deployment forces have been set up in the East European (Russia, Belarus) and Caucasian (Russia, Armenia) directions. In addition, Bordyzha said at a press conference in Moscow, there are collective rapid deployment forces in the Central Asian region made up of four battalions of the Russian, Kazakh, Kyrgyz and Tajik Armed Forces.

In reply to RIA Novosti's question, Bordyzha stressed that the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (ODKB) Charter envisages that each member-state of the ODKB will be provided with all kinds of assistance, including military, in case of aggression. In addition, none of the ODKB member-states can undertake steps that would threaten national security of other ODKB member-states.

As for the military presence of third states in Central Asia (in particular, the U.S.), Bordyzha said the ODKB leadership was ready for co-operation to fight the current threats: international terrorism and crime.

Bordyzha recalled that the U.S. forces deployed in Kyrgyzstan were involved in the Afghanistan operation. He said their mission had not been accomplished yet. "But we believe that American military presence in the Kyrgyzstan and other Central Asian countries must be determined by the period necessary for stabilisation of the situation in Afghanistan," Boredyzha said.
