The conditions for foreign investment in Kaliningrad Region are better than elsewhere in Russia, said German Ambassador to Russia Hans-Fridriech von Pletz on May 20. He is located in Kaliningrad on a three-day familiarization visit.
According to Rosbalt the goal of his visit is to attract German investment in the region in connection which his delegation also includes representatives of German business circles. He cited the positive experience of economic cooperation of active companies here with German capital like Avtotor and Baltkran. 'If Kaliningrad Region did not have the status of an economic free trade zone with its tax and customs zones, BMW would not assemble cars here. Moreover, the relationship between Russia and Germany is so good that we are making intrepid investment markets,' he said.
At the same time he acknowledged that administrative and customs barriers impede the dynamic development of contacts between Kaliningrad and German regions because of too many delays in procedures of registration of new joint venture companies, and unwarranted long lines of cars with loads on the border. He said that the European Union may be able to remove these obstacles to the region, which has been done now with the customs loading zone in Bagrationovsk where with the participation of EC funding a new customs terminal is being built.
Von Pletz will meet with Kaliningrad Region Governor Vladimir Yegorov in order to discuss the possibility of expanding the economic relationship of the German regions and Kaliningrad Region.
