Arktika Atomic Icebreaker to Return to Northern Seaway

Upgrading of the Arktika atomic icebreaker is being completed at the Murmansk dockyard (the Kola peninsula).

The Murmansk sea company told RIA Novosti Tuesday that the Arktika's steam generator had already worked more than 140,000 hours, which is almost 150% of the project standard. However, the generator's high quality and the upgrading underway on the icebreaker allowed its resource to be prolonged to 175,000 hours.

A commission of the Russian State Atom Supervision Board led by its chief Yury Vishnevsky visited the ship to oversee the works on the Arktika. It confirmed that the icebreaker would be able to continue to work.

After sea trials, the icebreaker will head for the Arctic to conduct ships along the Northern Seaway.
