AvtoVAZ Announces Plans to Produce Car with 1.8 Liter Diesel Engine

Beginning in 2005, AvtoVAZ intends to produce the VAZ-21048 automobile with a 1.8 liter diesel engine made by BarnaulTransMash. A spokesperson for the Volzhsky car factory said at the current time they are continuing the testing and engineering follow-up of the VAZ-21048 with 1.8 liter engine.

Production of the four-series diesel engine automobile began in 1998. The creation of the fuel efficient VAZ with diesel engine was conducted jointly with BarnaulTransMash. At the present time, the four-series is equipped with a 1.5 liter engine. Since the beginning of production, AvtoVAZhas made more than 5,000 diesel VAZ-21045 automobiles (in 2002, they produced 1,900). They are considering the possibility of producing 4,000 VAZ-21045 automobiles. Specific consumption of fuel for the VAZ-21045 is 5-6 liters of diesel fuel. The diesel car four-series by AvtoVAZ is sold primarily in Russia, especially in Siberia and the trans-Urals region.

Open joint stock company Volzhsky automobile factory opened in 1970. The charter capital of the company is USD 537 million. More than 75% of the stock of AvtoVAZ is controlled by the management of the company and closed joint stock company Central branch of the automobile finance corporation. The remaining stocks are scattered between 180,000 small stock holders. Total production of automobiles at AvtoVAZ dropped by 8.4% in 2002 in comparison with 2001 to 702,900 cars. The company plans to produce 690,000 cars this year, of which 90,000 will be exported.
