Alexis II on Possible Social Tension in Iraq

Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexis II does not rule out the possibility of an outburst of social tension in Iraqi society. "Disruption of the everyday routine and the habitual lifestyle may give rise to social tension in Iraqi society that has already been traumatized by military defeat," he told RIA Novosti.

The patriarch also said he was worried about the humanitarian situation in Iraq and feared that the post-war devastation could take years to overcome.

He went on to say that it was "especially important" to restore normal life in Iraq and provide its people with humanitarian aid, some of which is already coming from the Russian government. Alexis II also said he hoped international organizations, UN in the first place, would take an active part in post-war Iraqi settlement.
